My stomach dropped when Dagen staked his claim, not only as a father to Vaughn, but also as a partner to me.

I had hoped for something like this when I first looked him up, after I learned I was pregnant.

Our first connection, the one built on me deceiving him, felt different.

It was the only time I had remorse about a job I completed, and that was because it felt like there was something between us to lose.

As soon as Dagen told me we needed to talk, he shifted the conversation, setting me on edge. He finished his thought with, “But first, we’ll eat this fish. Then I’ll clean your wound, and we’ll talk over dessert.” His voice cracked on the last word.

Dagen knows how to shut me up. He knows exactly what to say when he wants to lead the conversation, and I nod like a sheep.

This earns me a satisfied grin.

We ate in subdued silence, talking half-heartedly about tomorrow: what we need to avoid, what our priorities are, and where we’ll go from Hazelton. We decide we’ll carry all our supplies until we reach the town limits, then we’ll ditch things like the tarp, fishing rod, and sleeping bag so we can move faster and more inconspicuously.

Although he gave me space to get used to our new reality, every time I tried to help, or moved to pick up something and handle it on my own, I was met with his disapproving glare.

With the promise of dessert hanging over us, dinner didn’t seem as appetizing, since it consisted of scrawny fish without seasoning. We ate quickly and without much commentary.

Then Dagen had me stand while he unzipped the sleeping bag, doubling its size so we could get comfortable while he played doctor.

Having Dagen hold me down and use the alcohol wipes to clean my wound was less fun than dinner.

I tried my best to focus on tasting that chocolate while Dagen took my bandage off and sanitized the area. A deep ache had settled into my stiff shoulder joint, and the exercises were more of a challenge than they were earlier.

Dagen muttered more than once that finding painkillers for me was one of our priorities.

Having him take charge of my care is new for me.

Instinctively, I want to jump up and say I can do it myself, but there’s a growing part of me that wants to indulge, as though his simple act of kindness is a guilty pleasure.

Now that everything is out of the way, it’s time for our reward.

Removing the hunting knife from its sheath, Dagen joins me on the sleeping bag near the fire, setting the chocolate between us and using the hard exterior of the first aid kit as a cutting board.

He chops the bar in half, and my deprived nose smells cocoa in the air immediately.

Spit floods my dry mouth. I lick my lips when Dagen pulls it apart, exposing the inside, and a long string of caramel thins between the two pieces.

“It’s got nougat and nuts!” Damn, I sound desperate.
